Net Zero

We provide a comprehensive strategy on the requirements to meet net zero, whether a Net Zero “ready” design or the use of carbon offsetting contributions.

In 2019 the UK Government amended the Climate Change Act to and set a target for achieving net zero emissions by 2050 (2045 in Scotland). These targets are being accelerated with many public authorities and organisations aiming to achieve Net Zero by 2030.

Our designs have always embedded sustainable, low energy and low carbon building principles and we bring this extensive experience to allow us to deliver Net Zero buildings and masterplans.

Existing Buildings

Existing building account for 40% of the UK’s carbon emissions, therefore, form a vital part in the journey to Net Zero.

At Harley Haddow we create a digital twin model of the building using dynamic simulation software and compare this with measured utility consumption. This helps us understand where and how energy is used and what viable savings can be made. We can then test and appraise options and set a planned journey for the measures required to meet Net Zero.

We will consider the architectural aesthetic, in particular consideration of any improvements that can be viably made to the existing building fabric without impacting on the internal environment of the spaces.

We are going through a period of significant change in legislation for our new buildings to allow them to be Net Zero ready and limit energy as much as possible.

As part of our route to compliance reviews for new buildings we carry out a full options appraisal for regulatory standards including future trends and requirements as well as providing operational energy use benchmarks to compare with compliance standards.

We can also provide advise and support for the assessment of the embodied carbon impact.

We understand that the route to net zero may not just be limited to the review of one building and it may impact a portfolio of buildings across a campus or a geographical area.

We can conduct a full Net Zero appraisal and digital twin review to pathway net zero across existing and proposed buildings and set a clear route on the measures required and applicable to the specific requirements of each building.

Our Services

Our involvement in research and development, reviewing new technologies, innovative M&E systems, use of renewable materials, and energy reduction and recovery systems allows us to provide a comprehensive picture specific to the requirements of the project.

Embodied carbon can also be considered, and implications reviewed and reported on for the selection of materials throughout the design and construction process.

A demonstratable path for delivery of net zero is then set, to allow us to report on the ongoing carbon reduction per year to allow a phased approach to meet net zero and impact on capital spend and running costs.

Our aim is to simply the process of net zero and provide our clients with a holistic multi-level approach.
